Broad Selective Breeding Goals
Aqua Gen operates a large-scale selective breeding program with systematic measurement of 22 traits in Atlantic salmon and
12 traits in rainbow trout. By measuring and keeping control over many important traits, we get a good basis for section
for maximal selective breeding progress and a minimal degree of inbreeding.
Selective Breeding Progress
What is the importance of selective breeding for the increase in productivity in the aquaculture industry?
Selective breeding of Norwegian Farmed Atlantic Salmon and Rainbow Trout
The breeding programs which were started on Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout in the 1970’s have played a deciding role in
the success of the Norwegian aquaculture industry. Visionary pioneers started the world’s first breeding program for these
farming species, and laid the foundation for today’s genetic material, which is well adapted to the demands of both producer
and consumer.
