Torstein Fjukstad and Mevlud Sadiku carried out stripping and fertilization of the first brood stock reared in sea, Wednesday, August 19th 2015 at AquaGen Hemne. This provides record early egg delivery in the season 2015/2016.

Novel ultrasound technology ensures all-year egg production.
AquaGen eggs are produced mainly by brood fish reared in the sea. This approach permits strong selection where only the brood with the best growth and resistance against the challenges faced by sea-reared fish, will contribute to the next generation. By using different light- and temperature regimes we can expedite and delay spawning and thus, enable egg delivery for 10 months of the year.

Research by AquaGen PhD-candidate Ingun Næve and Research Scientist Maren Mommens has given us better supervision and control over the salmons` maturation. The project develops new ultrasound methodology for rapid, objective and gentle determination of stage of maturity in female fish, and has produced good results already during the first year.

By implementing this new method we will be able to deliver eggs in the remaining two months of the year, August and September, through land-based production of brood fish in the season 2015/2016. We initiated this expanded production regime with the record early stripping of our brood fish on Wednesday, August 19th at the AquaGen production facility in Hemne. Consequently, our customers will receive the eggs two weeks earlier compared to previous years.

The development of our land-based brood fish production is supported by the Norwegian Research Council’s Aquaculture program.
