Following the transport of pedigree Atlantic salmon from Tingvoll to Hemne, the broodfish departments at Vestseøra site in Hemne municipality has also been placed under restrictions connected to the suspicion of ISA. These transports were carried out in advance of ISA being suspected at Tingvoll.
Measures against ISA at Tingvoll
AquaGen communicated on the 7th July 2017 the suspicion of ISA at its’ Merraberget sea site located in the Nesset municipality. This location was holding broodfish that were planned for stripping from September 2017. One group of fish from this population had already been transferred on-shore to the location called Rimstad in Tingvoll municipality. Both locations that belong to AquaGen are now subject to restrictions on the grounds of a confirmed ISA diagnosis from 12th July 2017. The location at Rimstad has already been emptied of fish, in advance of the statutory culling of fish at the Merraberget site. No increased mortality has been registered at Merraberget.
Fish from Tingvoll moved to Hemne
The location at Merraberget also held fish for breeding work planned for the autumn of 2017. As part of this work, 262 breeding fish were transferred from Rimstad to the broodfish department at the Vestseøra location at Hemne on 6th-7th June 2017. This group of breeding fish stayed for a short period at Rimstad, at the same time as the group of egg production fish, which has subsequently been confirmed diagnosed with ISA. There therefore exists a possibility of infection between the groups. The breeding fish was placed in a separate tank in a separate broodfish hall at Vestseøra, which was reserved for the breeding work. This hall is separated from other broodfish departments that are used to produce eggs to supply customers.
The fish from Tingvoll has been culled
In connection with the suspicion of ISA at the sites in Tingvoll and to minimize the risk of infection at Hemne, AquaGen chose to cull the 262 breeding programme fish from Rimstad before ISA was confirmed there. Biological material from the culled fish and remaining fish in the breeding hall were kept to be available for further analysis. The Norwegian Food Safety Authority has adopted restrictions on the broodfish department at Vestseøra in Hemne because of potential contagious contact with the fish group that was taken into the breeding hall. Intensive health controls will be implemented at the broodfish department, and the Norwegian Food Safety Authority has signalled that they can only lift restrictions on the broodfish departments that have not been subject to risk of infection from the fish from Tingvoll.
Hope for quick clarification
AquaGen hopes for a quick clarification for the other broodfish departments at Vestseøra in Hemne. There is no connection of the other departments at Vestseøra or at the sea locations in Hemne. Through further dialogue with the Norwegian Food Safety Authority, AquaGen will conduct follow-up analyses to clarify infection status and thus the basis for further restrictions on the broodfish departments. AquaGen will keep its customers and partners continuously informed about the situation.
