The seafood company Grieg Seafood has entered into a long-term strategic collaboration agreement with the breeding company AquaGen. Grieg Seafood Rogaland will produce broodstock and eggs of AquaGen strain at its own facilities in Erfjord. The agreement also includes egg deliveries from AquaGen to the company’s production in Rogaland, Finnmark and Shetland.
The value of genetics
The genetic material is a fundamental input factor in any food production, and an important success factor also in achieving a good salmon production. AquaGen selects salmon with good growth properties and high disease resistance and was the first to implement advanced methodology in the selection. This is a good match to Grieg Seafood’s focus on increased survival and improved growth that will take the company towards a production of 100,000 tonnes by 2020, says Andreas Kvame, CEO of Grieg Seafood.
Grieg Seafood and AquaGen find each other within key areas for further development of the salmon industry, such as profitable growth, environmental sustainability and digitization of the industry. AquaGen can document significant progress for several key traits in the breeding work of crucial importance for sustainability and welfare. A strong commitment to the selection for lice resistance and disease resistance in the salmon will help ensure Grieg Seafood control of the lice and good survival in the production. Both parties strongly believe in broodstock production in sea water cages as a means to achieving strong selection pressures for growth and survival under the most relevant environmental conditions.
The companies also share a common interest in making greater use of production data to better understand salmon biology and use this knowledge to further develop the production processes. “We are looking forward to working closely with a future-looking producer like Grieg Seafood,” said Nina Santi, CEO of AquaGen.
A skilled egg producer
The egg production of Grieg Seafood Rogaland is located at Erfjord in Suldal municipality. The company Erfjord Stamfisk was acquired by Grieg Seafood in 2011 but was established in 1987 and is a traditional bearer in broodstock and egg production in Norway. Erfjord produces eggs of high quality and viability, and AquaGen looks forward to offering eggs of AquaGen strain also from this reputable egg producer.
